Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees Pulled From Dombivli Theatres After Protests

Just hours after the release of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees, protesters gathered outside Tilak and Madhuban Talkies, two single screen theatres in the Mumbai suburb of Dombivli and demanded that the film be banned.

They tore down posters of the film and created a ruckus after which it was announced that the film will not be screened in the two theatres.

Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil, which released today alongside Raees seems to have been unaffected and will be screened in the theatres.

The protesters claimed that they want Raees to be banned because it is based on the life of infamous Gujarati gangster Abdul Latif.

Abdul Latif Abdul Wahab Shaikh was one of the Gujarat's most dreaded gangster in the 1980s. He was an underworld figure in Gujarat and an alleged associate of Dawood Ibrahim.

Plus, some of the gathered protesters claimed that they were angered by the presence of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan in the film.
The vandalism seems to be owing to a video of Mahira Khan, seemingly condescending to India, that had gone viral recently.

There's been a lot of pressure on the makers to drop the Pakistani actress, the film's leading lady, from the cast.

But Shah Rukh Khan and the film’s producer Ritesh Sidhwani had met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray to sort out the issue and the politician had promised a smooth release for the film.

But it looks like trouble has come looking for Raees.
